Real Madrid have demanded that they are paid a fee of €2 million to allow Hercules’ loan signing Royston Drenthe to play against them in this weekend’s Primera Division encounter.
The Dutchman endured a torrid time at los Blancos, but has been in sparkling form for the Alicante club so far this season, producing a string of confident displays and endearing the fans to his enterprising approach.
Reports from various Spanish news sources suggest that a clause inserted in the season-long loan deal that saw Drenthe depart the Santiago Bernabeu meant that should Hercules wish to field the 23-year-old against the league leaders, a fee of €2m must be paid.
Drenthe said this week that he still holds out hope of playing in the match, and is preparing for the game as such, stating: “Maybe the one who wants to pay to play is me. I am still working under the assumption that I will play.”
At this stage it seems highly unlikely that either club or player will be willing to pay such an extravagant sum in order to compete in a single match, particularly the sum being requested is around one-twentieth of Hercules’ total budget for the entire season.
